HARVEST

2021

Steffie questions the way society deals with materials. That is why she wants to propose a new way of harvesting local materials within this project.

Harvesting no longer has to be done from a field or sheep but can now be done from other sources that are created by mass production and mass consumption. Looking from a new perspective to the textile sorting center you can see this as a field full of textile. This field is used in this series of rugs.

Knitted sweaters that no longer can be worn are raveled out by which the yarns are recovered.

These rugs are tufted with these recovered yarns. By tufting two yarns at the same time, each of a different color and a different part of the sweater, a new field of colors is created. These rugs show the modern field, the new way of harvesting.

These yarns have specific properties, they curl because they are recovered from a knitting.

On the back of each label you can see the story of the rug, what it has been, where the material is coming from and who processed and made the rug.

All yarns are unique in material and colour, which creates the different structures in every surface.
